Surrealist Collages
Poughkeepsie DAC 2018
Kaitlyn's Cool Creators: Ages 7-8
Emily's Pandas: Ages 7-8
Raissa's Visionaries: Ages 8-9
The theme this week is "All Mixed Up"!
Day 1:
Today we had a big discussion about Surrealism and collage. These artists have the option of getting their picture taken so it could be printed and become the main focus of their collages. If they decide not to get their photo takes, they need to find something in provided magazines and books to be the main focus. Today is the beginning of collecting cut out images for the collages.
Day 2:
Artists begin gluing down their photos and cut outs after learning about composition. I have my own photo printed out to show examples of the possibilities of cutting up and organizing your portrait. Magazines, old books, patterned paper, construction paper, and tissue paper are available to use.
Day 3:
A continuation of Day 2!
Day 4:
Most artists are ready to move on from collaging. I introduce Zentangle designs. The artists practice Zentangle patterns and then are able to add the repeating decorative marks to their pieces with sharpie. Water color can be used over sharpie marks to create a pop of color and fill in empty spaces.
Day 5:
Today artists need to finish up their Zentangle and watercolor marks. They are shown how to properly mark their pieces corners on a background paper so they can glue it down and make a color border. If there is extra time, they have the option of adding 3D materials to their collages or designing Zentangle on the color border.
