Character Design
Poughkeepsie DAC 2018
Matt's Minions: Ages 5-6
Jenn's Incredibles: Ages 10-11
The theme this week is "All Mixed Up"!
Teacher Example: |
Day 1:
These artists learned about character design and how when a new character is made, they are sketched from many different angles and can have multiple emotions. Each DAC artist needs to create their own Mixed Up character. It can be unrealistic or realistic, it's their choice. If they have a hard time deciding, I have a bag of plastic animals. Whichever animal is picked at random gets to be fused with a human.
When designing their character, DAC artists can pick at least two of the following three options to draw on the same watercolor page:
1. Front view
2. Side view/profile)
3. Closeup/head shot
They draw in pencil today.

Day 2:
Character design pages continue. When two of the three options are planned out in pencil, these artists go over their sketches in black sharpie and then watercolor paint.
Day 3:
Character Design pages need to be finished today.
I introduce graphic novels & comic strips. We discuss how comic books/graphic novels are different than regular books. They break up their pages into boxes, come up with a story about their designed character, and begin sketching.

Day 4:
Comic strips are continued in pencil and then drawn over in sharpie. If an artist is confident enough, they can just draw with the sharpie.
Day 5:
Comic strips have to be finished today!
Finishing up the sharpie is the goal for the first half of class. The second half is about adding color to the comic strip with water colors or colored markers.
