Art Activity Period
At John A. Coleman Catholic High School, students sign up for an activity period of their choice. Every Thursday, the schedule changes to accommodate the extra period of the day.
For my Art Activity Period, I had my student artists look at images of street murals, both famous ones and those that exist in the nearby town of Kingston, NY. We discussed what makes a good mural: has a main theme, has a color scheme, is thoughtfully planned out, intrigues the public, and gets viewers to ask questions about it.
The student artists here broke up into groups of no more than 4 students per group and began designing their mini-murals. They could choose to paint solo. I counted up the number of groups and bought 18in x 24in wooden boards for each group.
Throughout the weeks, I discussed the individual ideas of each group with the artists and helped them problem solve and push their pieces to their full potential.
