Designing Communities
July 9th-13th
Ages 6-9
2.5 hour classes
Day 1:
These artists discussed what makes a positive community. They learned the differences between rural, suburban, and urban communities. Using texture marks from unusual tools, communities were designed. Cardboard communities were started.
Day 2:
Cardboard communities were under construction. These artists took a trips outside to incorporate real nature into their sculptures.
Materials Included: Cardboard, tissue paper, fabric, wire, construction paper, markers, clay, paint.

Day 3:
Before learning how to assemble clay sculp, these artists learned about free standing structures and attempted to build their own in the Marshmellow Challenge.
They also learned a bit about figure drawing and how to draw the human form as simple shapes. This helped them form and connect 3D clay shapes together for their sculptures.

Day 4:
On day 4, these artists were able to continue to use any materials to create an individualized community. Their sculptures were naked and ready to paint and the glue gun station was up and running!
Day 5:
The projects needed to be finished today! We took our last trip outside to collect natural materials for the communities and worked the entire class to make sure everything was complete and ready for the show this afternoon.
Final Show!
These artists designed their gallery space, wrote artists statements, and made signs and arrows to direct families and friends to the show.
